“Earlier today a Republican Network for Unity Ard Comhairle delegation, returning from a series of meetings in Glasgow, was detained at Belfast International Airport arrivals by a group of approximately twenty (20) uniformed and plain clothed RUC/PSNI members. As one an Ard Comhairle member from Derry was being questioned, the plain clothed RUC/PSNI man menacingly told him that he was well aware of the make up of the individual’s family and of the details and names of his children. The same plain clothed RUC/PSNI man then inquired if he had any information on those he was travelling with and/or of the RNU in general.

Yesterday in Belmullet District court, Maura Harrington was jailed for the fourth time this year over her opposition to Shell's plans in Mayo. Judge Mary Devins sentenced Ms Harrington to 3 months in jail for assaulting an employee of IRMS, and 3 months for trespassing in a farmyard close to the landfall site in Glengad on June 19 2008. Ms Harrington was also fined a total of €1000. This incident occurred shortly after Shell began drafting in security into the area and they had begun filming people in the locality (it hadn't been discovered these were working for IRMS at that stage).

Yesterday, marked one year to the day that Maura Harrington began her hungerstrike which lasted 11 days until the Solitaire left Irish waters. read full story / add a comment

By all accounts it appears that members of the Gardai were not truthful in their dealings throughout Michael McKevitt’s case. The latest conflicting evidence between two senior Garda officers certainly warrant an immediate investigation to identify if flawed evidence also contaminated the civil case in Belfast, resulting in a double miscarriage of justice.

An excellent piece of investigative journalism from the German "Spiegel" magazine Martina Keller and Markus Grill has just been translated into English. It examines a US owned company which through its German subsidiary harvests human body parts (termed tissue) from dead Ukrainians. The illegal global trade in organ and tissue harvesting for so long associated in the public mind with the Chinese penal system and to a lesser extent the theft of organs from Indian peasants has not ended. Rather it has moved out of the gulags and slums into Wall Street trading on the cutting edge of medical treatment providers. The other side of Obama's health care, if you like. Aung San Suu Kyi was arrested and charged with breach of the terms of house arrest in May 2009, just days before her current term of house arrest was due to end. The lengthy trial has now ended and the Nobel Peace Prize winner has been found guilty and sentenced to three years jail and hard labour. However, in a move surely aimed at avoiding international sanctions, Home Affairs minister General Maung Oo said outside the court that military ruler Than Shwe had signed a special order suspending the sentence and ordered that Suu Kyi should spend 18 months under house arrest. read full story / add a comment

Colonel Luis Arce Gómez was the right hand man of Luis García Meza who headed up the bloody coup d'etat in Bolivia on the 17th of July 1981. His extradition to serve a prison sentence for abuses of human rights and international drug trafficking has long been sought and expected as the least sign that one really can squeeze blood from stones without resorting to magical alchemy or that elusive Nobel prize category of finest plasterers or Quantum brickies.

As of writing this man born in 1938 can only enjoy only sparse internet biographical referential coverage in either Spanish language or English. Though I'm sure we can correct that soon enough. We need to explain so much about the chap who as usurping minister of the interior counted on such luminaries and advisors as the convicted NAZI and ex-SS officer, Klaus Barbie as well as the Italian fascist terrorist, assassin of trade unionists & champion of arch-catholic values Stefano Delle.
