The official story is that the origins of the current crisis lie in the collapse of the US subprime mortgage market - i.e. poor people not paying their mortgages. Although this may have been the trigger event, it is not the real cause. The real cause lies in pyramids not houses. Specifically the enormous debt pyramid built up by the Western countries, particularly those following the Anglo-saxon economic model - which, unfortunately for us, includes Ireland. read full story / add a comment

While the rest of us are coming to terms with a deepening recession, growing house repossessions, stagnation in rises and steep rise in the cost of living. In the face of a so-called downturn in the housing market and credit crunch, the wealthy in the form of parasitic property developers and speculators expect to be bailed out by the Government for their calculated era in borrowing too much from Banks and leading to first time buyers read full story / add a comment

The following article was written by an Adult Education discussion and research group based in the north inner city. It was a collective effort by Ger, John, Pip, Jonathan Wheelock and Damian. For us it is important to discuss homelessness because it is not just something that we pass by on the streets guiltily ignoring people or handing out a few pence depending on our humour. It is definitely not something we just read about in reports or newspapers- it is a problem that we have or could experience in the future. Everyone in the media talks about the Celtic Tiger but we don’t see it in our areas and we see more people on the streets rather than less and we want to know why. read full story / add a comment

On Wednesday, February 27th, news broke of the Health Services Executive’s decision to freeze funding for homeless services. This move makes an absolute mockery of government policy and the official target to eliminate homelessness by 2010. Organisations working with people who are homeless have already begun to feel the pinch of what is effectively a cutback. read full story / add a comment
