"Palestine belongs to the Arabs in the same sense that England belongs to the English or France to the French. It is wrong and in-human to impose the Jews on the Arabs" (Mahatma Gandhi) "I believe that Gandhi's views were the most enlightened of all the political men of our time. We should strive to do things in his spirit: not to use violence for fighting for our cause, but by non-participation of anything you believe is evil" (Albert Einstein) In weather, more the revenge of Gaia than ultra bad, after their testimony at the Galway Inter-Faith Alliance organised; A Commemoration of the Life and Work of Mahatma Gandhi, three Palestinians joined Free Palestine Campaign activists at their Shop Street info stall last Saturday, Dr. George Rishmawi, Director of Siraj, Center for Holy Land Studies, Dr. Mohamed Altawil, Dr. of Psychology, University of Hertfordshire, UK and Tareq Natsheh of the Palestine Progressive Youth Union. read full story / add a comment

What is 42 day detention? 42 day detention is part of the new counter terrorism bill that the British government is trying to pass. The bill successfully made it’s way through the House of Commons thanks to the last minute help of the Democratic Unionists. We do not know what the Democratic Unionists were offered in return for their votes but it has been suggested that honours and titles may have been on the shopping list. The bill aims to extend the amount of time that a terrorist suspect can be held without charge from 28 days to 42 days. The bill needs to pass through the House of Lords before it becomes law. To date it has received its first and second reading and is to go through it’s review stage this week. read full story / add a comment

It is everywhere. The talk of the bail out. And now the talk of the extra $140 billion they bribed the politicians to pass it. Meanwhile tens of millions of American workers are watching their savings, pensions, homes and jobs vanish before their eyes. The anger about the bail out prevented it being passed the first time. There has been a fundamental shift in consciousness in the US working class. It will not go back to having the same trust in the Republicans and the Democrats and the system. However a much greater shift could have taken place if the union leaders instead of trailing with their heads down after the Democrats and the bail out had taken an independent stand. read full story / add a comment

We're looking for strong hi-res images from the Mayo struggle, to add to our 'Shell's Wild Lie' exhibition (http://www.artnotoil.org.uk/gallery/v/Shell/). Faces of those involved are good, but so are land/seascapes from the struggle etc. Please write to info@artnotoil.org.uk if you might be able to help. Thanks, Mark PS. We'd love any other images to consider, Shell-related or beyond, for the main Art Not Oil gallery, and here's some info we've sent to artists asking them to respond to the production of the Shell-sponsored 'Oedipus' in London: read full story / add a comment
