What is 42 day detention?

42 day detention is part of the new counter terrorism bill that the British government is trying to pass. The bill successfully made it’s way through the House of Commons thanks to the last minute help of the Democratic Unionists. We do not know what the Democratic Unionists were offered in return for their votes but it has been suggested that honours and titles may have been on the shopping list. The bill aims to extend the amount of time that a terrorist suspect can be held without charge from 28 days to 42 days. The bill needs to pass through the House of Lords before it becomes law. To date it has received its first and second reading and is to go through it’s review stage this week. read full story / add a comment

It is everywhere. The talk of the bail out. And now the talk of the extra $140 billion they bribed the politicians to pass it. Meanwhile tens of millions of American workers are watching their savings, pensions, homes and jobs vanish before their eyes. The anger about the bail out prevented it being passed the first time. There has been a fundamental shift in consciousness in the US working class. It will not go back to having the same trust in the Republicans and the Democrats and the system. However a much greater shift could have taken place if the union leaders instead of trailing with their heads down after the Democrats and the bail out had taken an independent stand. read full story / add a comment

Nobel Peace Laureate Mairead Maguire of the Peace People was among a party of internationals waiting in Larnaca, Cyprus recently for a sea-worthy boat to take them to Gaza with food and medicines. The venture has been postponed because near deals with boat owners fell through repeatedly and also because of high seas. However the 22 people involved including five Palestinian doctors, intend to return to Gaza and invite others to join them

This video represents the many people not given a voice in the mainstream media. They have been denied a voice mainly because of their dissenting views about the Corrib gas project in its current form. There are interviews with many people who have suffered both personally and financially for daring to oppose the oil and gas industry. This industry has been supported by the various intimidatory and violent methods used by the Garda. The mainstream media has consistently misrepresented the facts, and has failed to report human rights abuses taking place in Mayo. It has instead tried to demonise anybody who goes against their neo-liberal view-point on how Ireland should be organized and structured. Most of the interviews were filmed over the last month. Most people are amazed to witness a new Wall St crash, when the spectacle of the 1929 crash was supposed to have vanished forever.

For the past thirty years mainstream economists claimed that the market worked perfectly provided there was no state interference or strong trade unions. ‘You cannot buck the market’ was repeated like a mantra against anyone who dared to ask for higher wages, better environmental controls or a more developed welfare state. ‘Market forces’ were seen as wise spirits who knew best about how to run an economy. No one knew who or what they were but they appeared to work anonymously behind the scenes to make everything right. In almost every country, people were told to leave matters to these ‘market forces’ and not to seek too much regulation. In reality, these ‘market forces’ were gigantic financial houses which could move money around the globe at will.
