Over 25,000 letters calling on U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder to conduct a civil rights investigation of the 28 year conspiracy to execute death row political prisoner Mumia Abu-Jamal were delivered to the doors of the Department of Justice in Washington at the end of a spirited march and rally on Nov. 12.

Foam has been found in Scheaffer Creek, a tributary of the Juniata River watershed which supplies Pennsylvania's capital. Springs and ponds downhill from Spectra Energy's drilling pads first showed the foam weeks ago. The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has not tested for specific chemicals associated with natural gas drilling, and is telling residents that the foam is only laundry soap. Residents are worried that the cancer causing chemical 2-BE is present in their drinking water supplies.

Latin America may soon become the next front in Washington's so-called "War on Terror." Rep. Eliot Engel (D-NY) , Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere, held a hearing on Oct. 27 to investigate his "serious concerns about expanded Iranian influence in the region.?

The website for the founding chapter of Human Rights Coalition (HRC) in Philadelphia says that HRC ?was founded in 2001 based on the radical notion that there was a vital segment of the population missing from the organizing work against prisons: the families and loved ones of the over two million prisoners in this country. Not just as spokespeople or tokens, but in decision-making positions, deciding what campaigns to do and what issues to address. Incarcerated brothers took this idea, and asked their family members as well as some supporters to take the lead in building such an organization, and the HRC was born."

In the aftermath of Fort Hood, more time spent on gratuitous anti-Arab and anti-Muslim scapegoating is more time that PTSD is not addressed among veterans and active-duty personnel. Additional Fort Hoods are in waiting. However, the larger issue is that society must deal with the mental health effects of trauma and violence - not only on the battlefield, but at home on the streets of America. Violence begets violence, and war is terror, whether it occurs in Iraq, Afghanistan, North Philly, East L.A. or Chicago.

Political Scientist Michael Parenti catalogued seven generalizations about the way the news media create anti-union messaging--from painting workers as greedy, to omitting the salary of management or depicting public officials (like Mayor Nutter) as neutral. Using this lens to dissect the coverage of the SEPTA strike, it becomes clear that local media like the Inquirer and Daily News have a dangerous anti-union bias, once again making the case that to build our own movement we need our own media. Pennsylvania prosecutors, twice rejected in their efforts to impose the death penalty on Mumia (in 2001 and 2008), may have found new support in the U.S. Supreme Court. It appears that the court?s delay in ruling on the validity of Mumia?s original execution sentence was due to its decision to grant oral arguments in the Ohio case of Smith v. Spisak, a case that might re-write or reinterpret the nation?s laws to make it easier to obtain jury verdicts calling for execution. The Court heard Ohio prosecutor?s arguments for Spisak?s execution on October 13, 2009. A ruling is expected in the year ahead.

On the morning of December 4, 1969, lawyer Jeffrey Haas received a call from his partner at the People?s Law Office, informing him that early that morning Chicago police had raided the apartment of Illinois Black Panther Party Chairman Fred Hampton at 2337 West Monroe Street in Chicago. Tragically, Hampton and fellow Panther Mark Clark had both been shot dead, and four other Panthers in the apartment had critical gunshot wounds. Police were uninjured and had fired their guns 90-99 times. Throughout the assault Hampton had remained unconscious (strong evidence emerged later that a paid FBI informant had given Hampton a sedative that prevented him from waking up) and after police forced his 8-month pregnant fiancee, Deborah Johnson, out of the bedroom, two officers entered the room where Hampton still lay unconscious. Johnson heard one officer ask, "Is he still alive?" After two gunshots were fired inside the room, the other officer said, "He?s good and dead now."

With the Judicial and District Attorney elections rapidly approaching, voters are asked to choose among judicial and district attorney candidates without having any real information upon which to base their choice. In order to make an informed decision as a voter, it is important to know what like-minded people who have professional and personal experiences with the candidate actually think. As a progressive bar association dedicated to the need for basic and progressive change in the structure of our political and economic system, the Philadelphia Chapter of the National Lawyers Guild (NLG) is concerned with the lack of information available for all of the candidates. To that end, the Elections committee of the Philadelphia Chapter of the NLG developed and administered a questionnaire in order to survey members of the Philadelphia progressive legal community about Judicial and DA candidates.
